Breed-specific Shiba rescues
NorCal Shiba
We do not operate outside California, but our Surrender Concierge handles California cases honestly if you are passing through or moving.
Surrender Concierge →National Shiba Club of America (rescue referral)
The Pacific Northwest's longtime Shiba-specific rescue is offline right now. Until it returns, the National Shiba Club of America can refer Washington owners to the nearest active breed rescue.
shibas.org →Multi-breed rescues that take Shibas
Seattle Humane
Bellevue-based open-admission shelter serving the Seattle metro. Breed-aware adoptions team; Shibas and Shiba mixes appear in their adoptable list.
seattlehumane.org →Petfinder (filtered for Shiba Inu in Washington)
Aggregates listings from Washington shelters and multi-breed rescues. Useful for spotting Shibas in shelter systems before kennel stress works against them.
petfinder.com →What to look for in a Shiba rescue
- Breed-experienced screeners. A rescue that asks about fence height, prey drive tolerance, and recall realism understands Shibas.
- Foster-based, not kennel-based. Shibas decompensate fast in kennel environments. Foster homes give a more honest behavioral picture.
- Written intake and adoption agreements. Verbal handshakes leave both sides exposed.
- An honest return policy. Reputable rescues take dogs back if a placement fails.
- Realistic expectations. A rescue that promises a "great family dog" without questions is overselling the breed.
If you are in Washington and need to rehome a Shiba
With the regional Shiba rescue offline, start with the National Shiba Club of America referral above, then Seattle Humane and the multi-breed options. Disclose any bite history honestly. NorCal Shiba only handles California cases.
If you are in Washington and want to adopt
Start with our honest self-assessment. If the breed matches your situation, watch the listings above and filter Petfinder for Shiba Inu in Washington.
